Femtocell - definition
Femtocell is a small low power cellular base station, designed for typically home and small business purposes. A femtocell increases the coverage of mobile network in indoor or closed locations. Femtocell connects to the carrier via broadband such as DSL or cable. It surprisingly improves network coverage and signal strength, in such way mobile services requires less power for connectivity and the battery life increases as well. Many operators offer femtocell services worldwide. Theoretically the range of a standard base station may be up to 35 kilometers (22 mi), and in practice could be 5–10 km (3–6 mi), a microcell is less than two kilometers wide, a picocell is 200 meters or less, and a femtocell is in the order of 10 meters.
