Breadcrumbs - definition

In user interfaces, websites, and software programs, the term "breadcrumbs" refers to a form of navigational assistance that displays the user's current position within a hierarchy of pages or content. Breadcrumbs are a trail of links or text that show the user's journey from the homepage or main menu to the current position. They often appear towards the top of a website or application screen.
Without having to utilize the back button or main menu, users may instantly return to a previous page or level of the hierarchy by using breadcrumbs. Additionally, breadcrumbs can assist with information architecture, search engine optimization, and user understanding of a website's or application's structure and organization.
Breadcrumbs come in a variety of forms, such as history-based, attribute-based, and location-based breadcrumbs. While attribute-based breadcrumbs offer links to other content with related attributes, location-based breadcrumbs indicate the user's current position within the hierarchy of pages or content. History-based breadcrumbs enable easy access to a prior search result or page by displaying the user's previous journey across the website or application.
