Aspect Ratio - definition

Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height which usually takes place in pictures or displays. It is connected to resolution directly. Different displays and pictures may have different aspect ratios. In earlier SD (Standard Definition) TV, we have seen the ratio was 4:3, now we saw HD TV supports aspects ratio of 16 : 9.
How does it come?

i.e.: Suppose, a picture or video resolution is 1920 x 1080 [1920 is the width; 1080 is the height], now if we write them as ratio then these two parameters will seem like width: height = 1920 : 1080. If we divide both of the parameters by the same denominator 120, then it’ becomes 16 : 9.

Why it is important?
When post-processing something if the aspect ratio is not maintained then the picture or frame will look squeezed from one side or both. So, it is one of the most important parameters when talking about a viewable media file.
